New Site Dedicated to Tzvetan Vassilev’s Application under the US Magnitsky ActDecember 4th, 2017Bulgarianmagnitsky.com – a new site dedicated to Tzvetan Vassilev’s application under the US Magnitsky Act – has been launched. As it is well known, on 11 August 2017 Tzvetan Vassilev submitted an application under the US Magnitsky Act against Bulgaria’s General Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov and Bulgarian Member of Parliament and media mogul Delyan Peevski. The US Magnitsky Act allows the US Government to sanction corrupt foreign government officials implicated in human rights abuses by denying them access to US territory and freezing their assets.
Tzvetan Vassilev argues that Tsatsarov and Peevski deliberately violated his human rights to hide corruption on a massive scale. Vassilev’s application was supported by Bill Richardson’s Center for Global Engagement. Richardson himself has referred to Vassilev’s case as “Bulgaria’s Magnitsky.”
The new site bulgarianmagnitsky.com provides an overview of the case and contains ample information about Bulgaria’s failed democracy and institutions which have been the subject of concern by key international organizations and NGOs. Even though Bulgaria is a member of the European Union, it has major issues with corruption, denial of basic rights and freedoms, and lack of rule of law. |
